Random News: Fifty Shades of Grey Movie Trailer

Hi everyone,

The movie trailer for the highly anticipated adaptation of E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey has been released. You can see the movie trailer below:

Fifty Shades of Grey became the biggest selling book on Amazon.co.uk of all time, with Fifty Shades Freed and Fifty Shades Darker taking second and third place. Why is Fifty Shades of Grey so popular given the critics have slated the book for poor writing and a lack of plot? Well, sex sells! (see article here at the Huffington Post). It seems that the movie trailer has become the most viewed movie trailer of 2014 within just a matter of days. Within the first week of release, there have been over 36 million YouTube views! (see article here at the Hollywood Reporter).

How have people reacted to the movie trailer?

It’s been a mixed bag. I think that the best analogy to describe people’s reactions to the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer is this: You’ll either love or hate the movie trailer.

Some of the Fans loved the trailer  –>

On the one hand, some fans seem to be enjoying the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer.

Fifty Shades of Grey appears to have gone down well on Buzzfeed (see articles here and here). The first article essentially shows almost all of the “erotic” content in the movie in gifs. I use erotic in inverted commas because if you didn’t know that Fifty Shades of Grey was an erotic novel, you may not guess it from the movie trailer, except for one or two gifs (see below). I guess the first article really shows the romance between Christian and Anna, plus a minor amount of their kinky bedroom antics.

The second article includes 50 thoughts that Virgin Mobile had while watching the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer. Some of the thoughts are pretty random, but most of them gush about Christian or the “erotic” content in the trailer being amazing.

I think the best fan reaction to Fifty Shades of Grey is a YouTube review by NuttyMadam. You can watch her reaction below:

I think that it is safe to say that some fans have reacted positively to the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer. When I say positively though, I don’t just mean they think the trailer fits with the book. Since the release of the Fifty Shades of Grey movie trailer, there has also been a 53% increase in online searchers for sex toys (see article here at Glamour Magazine). Cringe!

The Critics and Fans who hate the trailer  –>

On the other hand, the critics and some of the fans seem to hate the Fifty Shades of Grey trailerThere does seem to be two reasons for hating the trailer.

First, the sexual content in the movie trailer is LIGHT! According to an article written by Christopher Hooton for the Independent (see here)the movie adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey will be less explicit than the book. Michael De Luca, the producer, is quoted as saying:

“The film can’t be as explicit as the book…A picture is worth 1,000 words. So to be erotic on screen means I think an image is going to have way more power than reading the words on a page.”

I’m not sure that De Luca is right there. The fans of Fifty Shades of Grey are expecting explicit content in the movie. I mean the explicit content in the book – the graphic descriptions of the sex between Chrsitan and Anna – are what the fans like about the book and want in the movie. Indeed, TMZ interviewed members of a BDSM club called The Threshold Society in L.A. and they were left wondering where the BDSM content actually is. The Threshold’s coporate secretary explained that the Grey is pretty “vanilla” and the BDSM content is light. She said that there needs to be more light bondage, caning etc… (see article here at TMZ). There was also an article published in the Mirror that included 8 alternative movie trailers that may actually get the viewers pulses racing unlike the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer (see here). I have to say that I agree with the articles inclusion of Jennifer Aniston’s raunchy dance in We’re the Millers (2013). You can see this scene below:

Second, some fans are concerned with the message that the movie (movie trailer and book series) sends to the younger generations. De Luca suggests that while much of the explicit sexual content is removed from the movie, you are left with an “intense and erotic love story”. I certainly don’t think that’s true. Fifty Shades of Grey certainly doesn’t tell a love story, and I think that it’s wrong for the movie makers to advertise the movie adaptation as a love story. What are we teaching the younger generation about what a love story constitutes? I don’t think that we should teach the younger generations that true love is what happens in fairy tales (i.e., love at first sight, man rescuing a woman etc…), but neither should we teach the younger generations that true love involves abuse, whether that be mental or physical abuse. I am not alone in this sentiment either. If you look at the comments on both of the Buzzfeed articles that I included earlier, the comments show some people’s disgust that Fifty Shades of Grey is being adapted into a movie given the “hyper-controlling,emotionally manipulative sadist[ic]” content (Shaina Higgins, see comment here). There are also blog articles written about the inappropriate message that Fifty Shades of Grey is sending (see here). I appreciate that a small minority of people might desire this type of “love” story, but should we be romanticizing this kind of relationship for young people? Would you want your children to be in a relationship with Christian Grey? I certainly wouldn’t.

What do you think of the Fifty Shades of Grey movie trailer? Will you be going to the cinema to watch the movie on Valentine’s day 2015?

Random News: The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies Teasers

Hello Lovely Readers,

To continue my post from yesterday with the news from SDCC, today we are going to be looking at what has been released for The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies. First thing that was released were some posters. You can check out one here, or check it out below!

And then yesterday the first teaser trailer for the movie was released!! Check it out below. Honestly, it is set up to break my heart, there is just so much that I want to see and not see in the final part of The Hobbit. The armor and the armies looks great, and the use of Pippin’s song was wonderfully done!

Lastly, Peter Jackson has announced that there will be a bit fan contest coming up, with registration starting in August. The prize is to win a flight to New Zealand to watch the premier of the movie with Peter Jackson! I know I will be entering! Check out the information in the video below.

So how excited are you guys, because I know I am super pumped for this movie (even though I know it will bring nothing but tears!)

Random News: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 Teaser Trailers

Hello everyone, The first and second teaser trailers for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 have been released. The trailers are beautifully in keeping with the Mockingjay book where President Snow airs broadcasts with Peeta by his side, and District 13 hack the network and show their own videos with Katniss as the Mockingjay. I wasn’t sure whether I liked the trailers at first, but they do give the viewer an idea of what is to come in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, and the style of the trailers make the movies seem so much more real. Lynne has already posted the first teaser trailer elsewhere in the blog, but I’ve included both teaser trailers below so that you can watch them back-to-back easily.  According to hypable.com, there is a third trailer will be released shortly. Fingers crossed the third trailer will include Katniss interrupting the Capitol’s broadcast! Watch this space because we will be adding the third teaser trailer (and 4th??) when they are released! The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 Teaser Trailer #1   The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 Teaser Trailer #2   Additionally, it seems that the movie producers are really making an effort to make the movies feel real. The Capitol’s Twitter account was “hacked” yesterday by Beetee one of the rebels in District 13 and the following Tweet was made:

The Capitol’s official website, TheCapitol.PN, was also “hacked” by Beetee with “The Mockingjay Lives” and “You silence our voices, but we are still heard” appearing in the source code:

Source 1        Source 2

This has happened twice already, but the message isn’t always there. An inspection of the source of this morning (17/07/14) revealed no such hidden message. Click here to go to Capitol.PN so you can check out the source code for yourself (instructions here). What do you think of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 movie trailers? Have you spotted any other Rebel “hacks”?

Movie Trailer: Dracula Untold

Hello Lovely Readers,

This week is super busy for me, so you get another quick post about an upcoming movie. I had heard about this movie as I am a fan of Luke Evans’ work, and still have a soft spot in my heart for vampires, even after all that Twilight nonsense. So I was very excited to see the trailer for Dracula Untold. You can watch the trailer below.

I have to say, I am SUPER excited!! This basically looks like it was made for me! First, you have the origin story of Dracula, which was missing from the original novel. I love villain origin stories (see all my comments about Maleficent), and this looks epic. Second, it has lots of armor (and something other than English or well known styles of armor), and epic sword fights. Since I used to do stage combat, sword fighting is on of my favorite things to watch, especially if it is done well! Third, Luke Evans looks awesome and intimidating, plus he is rather good at sword fighting and wearing armor! Fourth, and lastly they used an epic cover of Everybody Wants to Rule the World, by Tears for Fears, the cover is by Lorde and is epically creepy and awesome. The original is one of my favorite songs, and this cover is even better!

So clearly I am excited for this movie, is anyone else?

Random News: Movie Updates

Hello Lovely Readers,

So this past week I stumbled across news for two sequels that I had sort of forgotten about. One was sad news for me, and the other pretty good news. I thought I would share them with you.

The first is from Buzzfeed where they bring out the facts about the American adaptation of The Millennium Trilogy. You can read the article here, and basically they sum up why we will probably not be seeing the next two movies. Which is a bit sad for me, as I loved the series, and the first movie wasn’t bad. However, I really loved the second two films in the original Swedish. Unlike Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, I had read the last two books before I saw the movie and knew how hard those would be to adapt. Even though I enjoyed the English adaptation of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, I still loved the Swedish one better, and was worried how Hollywood could adapt those next two books, which tell one huge conspiracy story! The article points out that it has been 4 years and there hasn’t really been any push to follow up the first movie, and that was a shock to me as it seems like it was just released. So I am sad to not see more from this series, but in the end it is probably for the best. Plus I still have the boxed set of the Swedish version, and those are excellent!

The second news is not anything new, as it had been talked about a couple years ago when the first on came out, but not things are more official. There is an article on Yahoo that you can read here, that talks that the next Snow White and the Huntsman movie would be without Kristen Stewart in it. Frances and I heard this news way back when, and to hear it again is encouraging. Our favorite parts of the first movie were the witch (Charlize Theron) and the huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) and they are both looking like they will be back. While I dislike the fact that this may be because Stewart was caught having a fling with the director, since she seemed to get the whole blame, whereas he was in a position of authority over her and got away with it, she was one of the two worst things about the movie. The best thing I had to say about her character was at least she didn’t talk much, which is not a great thing for your lead. The other trouble was the ending of the movie and the supposedly rousing speech Snow White gives, which was so muddled it completely lost everyone! With better writing and directing, and with our favorites back, the sequel could be so much better than the first movie, but only time will tell.

What do you guys think about this news?

Until next time,

Movie Trailer: Three Movie Trailers

Hello Lovely Readers,

Today I have three new(ish) trailers to share with you guys, all three of I am excited for. The first is one that you have probably not be able to avoid, which is the first teaser trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1. You can watch the trailer below. It is just enough to start to grab our attention, drop a little spoiler in (Peeta apparently siding with President Snow), and yet not jade us out on any great action sequences months before the movie hits theater. I really like this teaser (even if I am not a huge teaser trailer fan!)

The next on is the second trailer for The Giver, and I am much more impressed. Before I mentioned that the first trailer was confusing, didn’t match what I had always pictured, and just looked a bit of a mess. This one however fixes a lot of that. First thing is that they are doing what I expected, which is starting in black and white and then adding color as the memories are revealed (which will make sense if you read the book, or wait for my review of the book hopefully up within the month). Second is that it tells a cohesive story so anyone who hasn’t read the  book can have a vague idea of what the movie is about. Now I am much more interested in seeing this movie in cinemas!

The last is one that I have been watching out for since I heard the early decisions on casting, and that is the new Annie movie. I loved the earlier Annie movies, and I don’t even know how many times I read the novel when I was younger. I am really excited for this movie, as it looks like a good modernization. I love that the cast is much more diverse, as this better reflects the economic struggles that form the foundation of the story of Annie. Plus I am excited to hear how they adapt the songs!

So what do you all think, any of these movies look exciting for you? Have you read any of the books these are based on?

Until next time,

Movie Review: Maleficent (2014)

Movie Title: Maleficent (2014)
Director: Robert Stromberg

“Princess Aurora: “All the other fairies fly, why don’t you?”
Maleficent: “I had wings once, and they were strong. But they were stolen from me.
Maleficent (2014)

Final Verdict: A brilliant reimagining of Sleeping Beauty (1959) that is nostalgic because of the nods toward the original, but with new modern twists that update the tale for modern times.

We have now added the link to our secret content for Maleficent that you can access through the Maleficent review. In the secret post we discuss our thoughts on the ending and other spoilers!

Random News: Reviews of Maleficent

Hello Lovely Readers,

Frances and I watched Maleficent last week, and absolutely loved the movie. While we don’t have our review written up yet, I thought I would share some of the news I have found about the movie. I have found it very interesting to see how different everyone’s opinions of the movie are, it seems you either love it or you hate it.

Most prominent right after the movie was released were the negative or mostly negative reviews. You can read several of them here, here and here. It is hard to tell why these reviewers didn’t like the movie. Some seem to think it is dull, others wanted Maleficent to just stay bad the whole movie (but you know they would have complained that she didn’t develop throughout the movie if she had been evil the whole time), and some say it was overdone. One very interesting thing I noted from the three articles I pulled, and from memory it seems to hold, all these more negative reviews are from male reviewers. I think there is something in this film that really appeals to women and feminists, that these men seemed to have missed.

While reviews that have been more favorable have been slower in coming out they are starting to appear, however most of the positive reviews are coming from normal people. Strangely it seems that the regular populace is enjoying the film, and the critics are mixed to negative. One thing some of the reviewers can agree on is that Angelina Jolie commands attention in the role, and some are calling it a comeback for here. Most of all the support of the movie can be seen in the way the movie is winning at the box office. One interesting article talks about why Maleficent is doing well in the cinemas, and you can read that here.

For those of you who have seen the movie there is an interesting article over on Buzzfeed where Angelina Jolie talks about the ending. You can read it here. She has some very interesting insights into her character. Also in the behind the scenes type articles, there is a nice interview with the script writer, Linda Woolverton here, where she talks about some of the emotions she felt as she wrote some of the final scenes of the movie.

So have any of you seen the movie? What did you think? Also stay tuned for our review later this week!

Until next time,

Random News: Browncoat Friday

Hello Lovely Readers,

Ever since I watched the movie Serenity and made a friend because of it, who then introduced me to the wonders that were Firefly, I have been a Browncoat! Surprisingly, no matter where I went, I would eventually find the other Browncoats, and usually I was already friends with them. So it has become a bit like returning home for me to watch the series or the movie, as it reminds me of all my friends. For those that have no clue what a Browncoat is, a Browncoat is a fan of series Firefly (and/or the movie based on the series, Serenity). So since I was craving something shiny today, I thought I would share some fun finds for the other Browncoats out there!

First find is 21 Times You Found Serenity. This is mostly a list of how awesome Captain Malcolm Reynolds is, which is fun! For those who aren’t Browncoats yet, Serenity is the name of a battle that Captain Mal and his firstmate, Zoe fought in, and lost. The ship and the movie are named after this battle. But even more, it is a line in the theme song of the tv series, and you can listen to it at the bottom of this post.

The second find is 27 Signs You’re A Browncoat, and it is great. There is a much wider range of characters and events. It was very nice reminder for me of the whole series! It is so hard to pick a favorite one, but I do love Shepard Book, who is the one aiming for the kneecaps! ^_^

Lastly is a quiz to figure out Which Firefly Character You Are. I was excited to get Captain Mal, Mr. Captain-Tight-Pants himself. He is not the typical hero, but he is someone you can relate to, and his crew love him (in their own ways).

Since I was feeling nostalgic, and I love this song (it was the first one I taught myself when I tried to learn guitar). Here is the theme song, “The Ballad of Serenity,” from the series, Firefly. Also below is a video that I watched while working on this post, and I just couldn’t leave it out. So watch for some of the best quotes from the series and movie (my housemate who has never seen the show was laughing out loud as he heard some of these!)

So how many of you are Browncoats? Will any of you who haven’t seen the series watch it? I think I know what I am relaxing with this weekend, and in the words of Captain Mal, “I aim to misbehave!”

Until next time,

Random News: Hitting the Mark

Hello Lovely Readers,

Just a quick post today, but I couldn’t help it! So earlier this week I talked about when companies miss the mark and piss off their intended audience. On the flip side, some companies really know how to hit the mark and drum up customers. I think Marvel has done this once again with their new Guardians of the Galaxy trailer (the second one, although the first was excellent as well). You can watch it below. Both Frances and I are really excited for this movie. I am especially as I know very little about this set of heroes, and the last time I had a movie like that, Thor, I was very pleasantly surprised. So I am hoping Marvel can pull it off once again!!

What do you guys think? Does this hit the mark? Are there other trailers/ads that you think the companies just nailed it?

Until next time,
