Random News: Fifty Shades of Grey Movie Trailer

Hi everyone,

The movie trailer for the highly anticipated adaptation of E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey has been released. You can see the movie trailer below:

Fifty Shades of Grey became the biggest selling book on Amazon.co.uk of all time, with Fifty Shades Freed and Fifty Shades Darker taking second and third place. Why is Fifty Shades of Grey so popular given the critics have slated the book for poor writing and a lack of plot? Well, sex sells! (see article here at the Huffington Post). It seems that the movie trailer has become the most viewed movie trailer of 2014 within just a matter of days. Within the first week of release, there have been over 36 million YouTube views! (see article here at the Hollywood Reporter).

How have people reacted to the movie trailer?

It’s been a mixed bag. I think that the best analogy to describe people’s reactions to the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer is this: You’ll either love or hate the movie trailer.

Some of the Fans loved the trailer  –>

On the one hand, some fans seem to be enjoying the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer.

Fifty Shades of Grey appears to have gone down well on Buzzfeed (see articles here and here). The first article essentially shows almost all of the “erotic” content in the movie in gifs. I use erotic in inverted commas because if you didn’t know that Fifty Shades of Grey was an erotic novel, you may not guess it from the movie trailer, except for one or two gifs (see below). I guess the first article really shows the romance between Christian and Anna, plus a minor amount of their kinky bedroom antics.

The second article includes 50 thoughts that Virgin Mobile had while watching the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer. Some of the thoughts are pretty random, but most of them gush about Christian or the “erotic” content in the trailer being amazing.

I think the best fan reaction to Fifty Shades of Grey is a YouTube review by NuttyMadam. You can watch her reaction below:

I think that it is safe to say that some fans have reacted positively to the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer. When I say positively though, I don’t just mean they think the trailer fits with the book. Since the release of the Fifty Shades of Grey movie trailer, there has also been a 53% increase in online searchers for sex toys (see article here at Glamour Magazine). Cringe!

The Critics and Fans who hate the trailer  –>

On the other hand, the critics and some of the fans seem to hate the Fifty Shades of Grey trailerThere does seem to be two reasons for hating the trailer.

First, the sexual content in the movie trailer is LIGHT! According to an article written by Christopher Hooton for the Independent (see here)the movie adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey will be less explicit than the book. Michael De Luca, the producer, is quoted as saying:

“The film can’t be as explicit as the book…A picture is worth 1,000 words. So to be erotic on screen means I think an image is going to have way more power than reading the words on a page.”

I’m not sure that De Luca is right there. The fans of Fifty Shades of Grey are expecting explicit content in the movie. I mean the explicit content in the book – the graphic descriptions of the sex between Chrsitan and Anna – are what the fans like about the book and want in the movie. Indeed, TMZ interviewed members of a BDSM club called The Threshold Society in L.A. and they were left wondering where the BDSM content actually is. The Threshold’s coporate secretary explained that the Grey is pretty “vanilla” and the BDSM content is light. She said that there needs to be more light bondage, caning etc… (see article here at TMZ). There was also an article published in the Mirror that included 8 alternative movie trailers that may actually get the viewers pulses racing unlike the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer (see here). I have to say that I agree with the articles inclusion of Jennifer Aniston’s raunchy dance in We’re the Millers (2013). You can see this scene below:

Second, some fans are concerned with the message that the movie (movie trailer and book series) sends to the younger generations. De Luca suggests that while much of the explicit sexual content is removed from the movie, you are left with an “intense and erotic love story”. I certainly don’t think that’s true. Fifty Shades of Grey certainly doesn’t tell a love story, and I think that it’s wrong for the movie makers to advertise the movie adaptation as a love story. What are we teaching the younger generation about what a love story constitutes? I don’t think that we should teach the younger generations that true love is what happens in fairy tales (i.e., love at first sight, man rescuing a woman etc…), but neither should we teach the younger generations that true love involves abuse, whether that be mental or physical abuse. I am not alone in this sentiment either. If you look at the comments on both of the Buzzfeed articles that I included earlier, the comments show some people’s disgust that Fifty Shades of Grey is being adapted into a movie given the “hyper-controlling,emotionally manipulative sadist[ic]” content (Shaina Higgins, see comment here). There are also blog articles written about the inappropriate message that Fifty Shades of Grey is sending (see here). I appreciate that a small minority of people might desire this type of “love” story, but should we be romanticizing this kind of relationship for young people? Would you want your children to be in a relationship with Christian Grey? I certainly wouldn’t.

What do you think of the Fifty Shades of Grey movie trailer? Will you be going to the cinema to watch the movie on Valentine’s day 2015?

Random News: SDCC Movie News

Hello Lovely Readers,

Continuing on from my posts already thus week, I wanted to share more news from SDCC. As I am a big fan of movies and comics the news that I am sharing today was really interesting to me, and hopefully you guys agree!

First up is all the news trickling out about The Avengers Age of Ultron. Apparently there was a trailer show, but that has not be released out to the general public (although there are descriptions for those who are inclined). What they have released are mini-posters for each of the characters, and when combined it forms a large image. That is the picture above. It shows the team, and some new members, fighting robots and being overwhelmed. It looks epic, and it gives some nice glimpses of The Vision, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver, as well as all the previous ones. You can click here to see more details.

Related to that is that there will be a Captain America and Iron Man animated movie coming out before The Avengers Age of Ultron. The movie will be 71 minutes and is called Iron Man & Captain America: Heroes United. There is a great trailer for it that you can watch here. I love the interactions between these two heroes and I will be checking out the movie!

Another big reveal by posters is the look of Wonder Woman for the upcoming Batman vs. Superman. You can see more info here. I really like the costume, it looks pretty good. However, until the trailers come out, I am still not that interested in the movie. I am still not sold on the Batman costume, and I still don’t like Superman.

Lastly, is there is news about the next Godzilla movie. They have revealed the foes that Godzilla will be fighting with in the next movie, and they are some big ones. You can read about it here, but the big three are Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah. I am super excited for Mothra and Ghidorah, as I remember them from the old movies. Hopefully with the second movie the director will stay away from trying to add drama ans just stick to the monsters!

What do you guys think of these teasers that we have gotten?

Until next time,

Random News: The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies Teasers

Hello Lovely Readers,

To continue my post from yesterday with the news from SDCC, today we are going to be looking at what has been released for The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies. First thing that was released were some posters. You can check out one here, or check it out below!

And then yesterday the first teaser trailer for the movie was released!! Check it out below. Honestly, it is set up to break my heart, there is just so much that I want to see and not see in the final part of The Hobbit. The armor and the armies looks great, and the use of Pippin’s song was wonderfully done!

Lastly, Peter Jackson has announced that there will be a bit fan contest coming up, with registration starting in August. The prize is to win a flight to New Zealand to watch the premier of the movie with Peter Jackson! I know I will be entering! Check out the information in the video below.

So how excited are you guys, because I know I am super pumped for this movie (even though I know it will bring nothing but tears!)

Until next time,

Random News: Marvel is Marvelous

Hello Lovely Readers,

Very exciting comic news has happened over the past week thanks to Marvel. The most exciting, for me at least, is the release of the first official pictures from the next Avengers movie, The Avengers: Age of Ultron. You can click through to see the pictures here. Looks like most of the main characters have had slight changes to their costumes (most notably Captain America and Hawkeye). I have been trying to avoid plot spoilers/summaries, but the pictures look great. I just hope it can live up to how much I enjoyed the previous movie!

Second, and this was super surprising, marvel has announced that in the comics Thor will now be a woman. Instead of having a gender reassignment, the current male Thor will become unworthy and loose the ability to wield Mjolnir (his hammer), and instead one of the woman around him will be deemed worthy and when she picks it up will become the new Thor. I have mixed feelings about this, but mostly happy. I am excited that Marvel is making this happen, even if there is already presidents of others  wielding Mjolnir and gaining the powers (including several women such as Black Widow and Storm). It would be great to see a female superhero. However, I have some concerns on the writer and why we don’t get a new hero. So for now I am cautiously optimistic, and trying to decide how the male Thor becomes unworthy (I am hoping it happens in Original Sin which he is in, and I am reading because of Loki!). To read more on Thor you can click here.

Last news came right on the heels of the Thor announcement, and that is that in the comics we will be getting a black Captain America. The announcement that Sam Wilson AKA the Falcon (played by Anthony Mackie in Captain America: The Winter Solider) was released on the Colbert Report which you can read about here. I am excited to hear this, as Sam Wilson is an awesome character. There have been several times in the comics where other characters have taken up the mantle of Captain America from Steve Rogers, most notably Bucky Barnes. I think it shows some real catching up with the times that Marvel will now have a female and a black lead in some of their most popular series, I just wonder how long it will take DC to catch up (even if I do love DC for Batman and Batwoman!).

So are you guys excited about all this comic based news? I know I am, but also still a bit worried that it will fall short of my expectations!

Until next time,

Random News: Upcoming Trailers, Movies, and TV Shows

Hello Lovely Readers,

Just a quick one today from me. First is that apparently there will be a trailer for 50 Shades of Grey premiering this Thursday. The news was broken by Beyonce on her Instagram via a teaser trailer, you can watch here. I know some people are excited about this, I will be skipping the trailer and the movie!

In even better news, Disney is working on a new Jungle Book movie, and they are already casting a more racially diverse movie than we are used to from Hollywood. You can read about it here. Really exciting is that the lead role of Mowgli has been filled by Neel Sethi. Also in the cast are Idris Elba (Shere Khan), Ben Kingsley (Bagheera), Scarlett Johansson (Kaa) and Lupita Nyong’o. Apparently, only Sethi will be in the movie and the rest will be animated! I am excited for this, and may re-watch some of the other movie versions of the Jungle Book to celebrate!

Lastly, there is a new trailer out for the upcoming TV series, Outlander. You can read more about the series and watch the trailer here. The series is based on the series of books by Diana Gabaldon. I have never read the books (or heard of them) before seeing the trailer. The plot involves time-traveling (or falling into another time if you want to get technical), romance and some action. While the trailer looks good, it isn’t really my thing, so I will be giving this a pass.

Until next time,

Random News: Movie Updates

Hello Lovely Readers,

So this past week I stumbled across news for two sequels that I had sort of forgotten about. One was sad news for me, and the other pretty good news. I thought I would share them with you.

The first is from Buzzfeed where they bring out the facts about the American adaptation of The Millennium Trilogy. You can read the article here, and basically they sum up why we will probably not be seeing the next two movies. Which is a bit sad for me, as I loved the series, and the first movie wasn’t bad. However, I really loved the second two films in the original Swedish. Unlike Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, I had read the last two books before I saw the movie and knew how hard those would be to adapt. Even though I enjoyed the English adaptation of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, I still loved the Swedish one better, and was worried how Hollywood could adapt those next two books, which tell one huge conspiracy story! The article points out that it has been 4 years and there hasn’t really been any push to follow up the first movie, and that was a shock to me as it seems like it was just released. So I am sad to not see more from this series, but in the end it is probably for the best. Plus I still have the boxed set of the Swedish version, and those are excellent!

The second news is not anything new, as it had been talked about a couple years ago when the first on came out, but not things are more official. There is an article on Yahoo that you can read here, that talks that the next Snow White and the Huntsman movie would be without Kristen Stewart in it. Frances and I heard this news way back when, and to hear it again is encouraging. Our favorite parts of the first movie were the witch (Charlize Theron) and the huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) and they are both looking like they will be back. While I dislike the fact that this may be because Stewart was caught having a fling with the director, since she seemed to get the whole blame, whereas he was in a position of authority over her and got away with it, she was one of the two worst things about the movie. The best thing I had to say about her character was at least she didn’t talk much, which is not a great thing for your lead. The other trouble was the ending of the movie and the supposedly rousing speech Snow White gives, which was so muddled it completely lost everyone! With better writing and directing, and with our favorites back, the sequel could be so much better than the first movie, but only time will tell.

What do you guys think about this news?

Until next time,

Random News: Reviews of Maleficent

Hello Lovely Readers,

Frances and I watched Maleficent last week, and absolutely loved the movie. While we don’t have our review written up yet, I thought I would share some of the news I have found about the movie. I have found it very interesting to see how different everyone’s opinions of the movie are, it seems you either love it or you hate it.

Most prominent right after the movie was released were the negative or mostly negative reviews. You can read several of them here, here and here. It is hard to tell why these reviewers didn’t like the movie. Some seem to think it is dull, others wanted Maleficent to just stay bad the whole movie (but you know they would have complained that she didn’t develop throughout the movie if she had been evil the whole time), and some say it was overdone. One very interesting thing I noted from the three articles I pulled, and from memory it seems to hold, all these more negative reviews are from male reviewers. I think there is something in this film that really appeals to women and feminists, that these men seemed to have missed.

While reviews that have been more favorable have been slower in coming out they are starting to appear, however most of the positive reviews are coming from normal people. Strangely it seems that the regular populace is enjoying the film, and the critics are mixed to negative. One thing some of the reviewers can agree on is that Angelina Jolie commands attention in the role, and some are calling it a comeback for here. Most of all the support of the movie can be seen in the way the movie is winning at the box office. One interesting article talks about why Maleficent is doing well in the cinemas, and you can read that here.

For those of you who have seen the movie there is an interesting article over on Buzzfeed where Angelina Jolie talks about the ending. You can read it here. She has some very interesting insights into her character. Also in the behind the scenes type articles, there is a nice interview with the script writer, Linda Woolverton here, where she talks about some of the emotions she felt as she wrote some of the final scenes of the movie.

So have any of you seen the movie? What did you think? Also stay tuned for our review later this week!

Until next time,

Book Title: Dark Shadows: Year One
Author: Guiu Vilanova and Marc Andreyko

Final Verdict: Interesting to read, but probably not enough to draw you in if you weren’t already interested in Dark Shadows.

Random News: Browncoat Friday

Hello Lovely Readers,

Ever since I watched the movie Serenity and made a friend because of it, who then introduced me to the wonders that were Firefly, I have been a Browncoat! Surprisingly, no matter where I went, I would eventually find the other Browncoats, and usually I was already friends with them. So it has become a bit like returning home for me to watch the series or the movie, as it reminds me of all my friends. For those that have no clue what a Browncoat is, a Browncoat is a fan of series Firefly (and/or the movie based on the series, Serenity). So since I was craving something shiny today, I thought I would share some fun finds for the other Browncoats out there!

First find is 21 Times You Found Serenity. This is mostly a list of how awesome Captain Malcolm Reynolds is, which is fun! For those who aren’t Browncoats yet, Serenity is the name of a battle that Captain Mal and his firstmate, Zoe fought in, and lost. The ship and the movie are named after this battle. But even more, it is a line in the theme song of the tv series, and you can listen to it at the bottom of this post.

The second find is 27 Signs You’re A Browncoat, and it is great. There is a much wider range of characters and events. It was very nice reminder for me of the whole series! It is so hard to pick a favorite one, but I do love Shepard Book, who is the one aiming for the kneecaps! ^_^

Lastly is a quiz to figure out Which Firefly Character You Are. I was excited to get Captain Mal, Mr. Captain-Tight-Pants himself. He is not the typical hero, but he is someone you can relate to, and his crew love him (in their own ways).

Since I was feeling nostalgic, and I love this song (it was the first one I taught myself when I tried to learn guitar). Here is the theme song, “The Ballad of Serenity,” from the series, Firefly. Also below is a video that I watched while working on this post, and I just couldn’t leave it out. So watch for some of the best quotes from the series and movie (my housemate who has never seen the show was laughing out loud as he heard some of these!)

So how many of you are Browncoats? Will any of you who haven’t seen the series watch it? I think I know what I am relaxing with this weekend, and in the words of Captain Mal, “I aim to misbehave!”

Until next time,

Random News: Missing the Mark

Hello Lovely Readers,

So sometimes when companies try to advertise their projects they completely miss the mark, and even worse sometimes they annoy the very people they were trying to entice. I have just run into that twice in this past week, so I thought I would share those with you guys.

The first is the new “teaser” trailer for the live action Cinderella movie. It Disney’s words that it is a “teaser” trailer, I would call it either a tease trailer or a blatant cop-out. France was in the office when I watched this and she can attest to my rather unimpressed reaction to the trailer. Basically I was looking forward to just a couple glimpses of the world, characters, anything. Instead the whole thing is just a computer generated shot of the glass slipper…yes that is all…Clearly I am still upset about this. It feels like they were supposed to release a trailer and did not have enough prepared and this was the best they could do. Personally, I think if that is all they have ready, then release a poster or a gif. Honestly, they just should not have bothered, because instead of making me more excited for the film, I am almost ready to write the movie off. What do you guys think, check out the “trailer” below.

The second one isn’t nearly as bad, but I still think they missed the mark. It is a slideshow of updated outfits that our favorite literary heroines might wear, which you can check out here. While it is kind of nice to flip through, the one thing that really stuck out to me was the price of all the items. These are not things that normal book readers would be able to afford, most of the items are ridiculously expensive. Now for some heroines this might work, but others like Lizzie Bennett who is a very practical woman, would probably not be found dead in these. So while I appreciate the effort, I feel like maybe they need to spend some more time getting to know these characters before they say what they would have worn!

What do you guys think, are there times when companies mess up so bad it puts you off a product? When or what was the last item to do that to you? Am I overreacting to my feelings to the Cinderella “trailer”?

Until next time,
